VAT Exemption

VAT Exemption

What is VAT Exemption?

We operate a government-backed scheme which means you may not have to pay VAT on some goods you purchase from us. Please be aware that not all purchases by all customers are eligible for VAT exemption - please read the important information on how this scheme works below.

A purchase can only be exempt from VAT when all the following conditions are met:

1. you (or who you are buying it for) are chronically ill or disabled, this means a person who has:

(a) a physical or mental impairment which has a long term and substantial adverse effect upon his or her ability to carry out everyday activities, or,

(b) a condition that the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness, for example, diabetes, or,

(c) is terminally ill.

It does not include a frail elderly person who is otherwise able-bodied or any person who is only temporarily disabled or incapacitated, such as with a broken limb.

2. The goods are for personal or domestic use, this means:

(a) the goods are supplied for your or the person for whom you are ordering own private use, rather than for business purposes.

(b) The goods are not made widely available for a whole group of people.

How to claim VAT exemption?

When you are ready to checkout, complete the Shipping Address details and click the 'Next' button. If any goods you are purchasing are eligible for VAT Exemption, you will be asked to enter the name of the person you are claiming for, select a disability reason and then accept the Terms and Conditions. Click on the 'Apply VAT Exempt' button and you will see the Tax amount change in the Order Summary. Click 'Next' to continue to checkout.

You should also know

VAT will still be charged on the postage, so there will be a small amount of VAT on the Order Summary.

All orders submitted with a VAT relief claim are checked before the order is processed and it is necessary to complete a separate claim each time qualifying goods are purchased.

Further Information

The conditions for relief are contained in VAT notice 701/7 VAT - Reliefs for disabled people. This can be found on the HM Revenue and Customs Website to fully understand the conditions.

If you are uncertain, please contact us before completing your order, as VAT relief cannot be applied retrospectively.
